Here’s a closer look at how live illustrations work at weddings and what Sarah’s services entail.
What Is Live Illustration at Weddings?
Live illustration at weddings is the process of creating custom artwork during the event. It can take many forms, such as sketching guests, capturing key moments like the first kiss or first dance, or detailing the finer elements of the event, such as floral arrangements or place settings. Sketching the guests as a gift from the bride and groom is undoubtedly the most popular service according to Sarah Darby.
Sarah Darby brings a luxury touch to the experience, offering various styles of live illustrations that suit the needs of different wedding types. Whether you're looking for quick sketches of guests or larger-scale bespoke works that capture key moments from your day, Sarah’s expertise ensures your wedding is immortalized in the most artistic way possible.
Sarah Darby’s Live Event Services: Tailored to Your Needs
Sarah offers a variety of services designed to fit every couple’s vision and event size. Here’s a breakdown of the different types of live illustration services you can choose from:
1. Quick Sketch (For Guests)
For larger weddings or when you want to maximize the number of illustrations, the quick sketch service is a perfect option. This involves using a mix of pre-drawn outlines (such as a template of a couple, a group, or single guests) and from scratch sketches to quickly sketch attendees' features and outfits. The sketches are charming, lighthearted, and personalized.
This service is ideal for weddings where you want to keep the process moving and offer guests a fun memento of their experience. You can expect Sarah to sketch up to 12 guests per hour with this service. And we can customise your template to fit your event.
2. Luxury Details (Capture the Finer Details)
For a more bespoke experience, Sarah’s luxury details service allows for greater flexibility and creativity. Here, Sarah sketches every guest from scratch, creating one-of-a-kind illustrations that can include fashion poses, specific groupings, or unique details from the day.
This service is perfect for smaller group events or when you want to capture more intricate elements, such as a beautifully detailed bridal gown or the unique interactions between guests. Typically, Sarah can sketch about 6-8 individuals per hour using this service. The timing is the same whether or not the sketches are groups or individuals.
3. Capture The Moment (Larger-Scale Artwork)
If you’re seeking more than just a quick sketch and want to capture those monumental moments in larger, more intricate artworks, this service is for you. Sarah will work with you in advance to understand the key moments you want captured, such as walking down the aisle, the first kiss, or the first dance.
These larger-scale artworks are ideal for couples who want to preserve significant memories from the day in a truly special way. You can expect bespoke illustrations that are both emotional and beautiful, capturing the essence of your wedding in stunning detail. For a 4-hour session, Sarah could typically capture around 3-4 larger moments along with a few smaller sketches.
What if I have more guests than Sarah can cover in booking time?
Sarah offers post-event service that’s ensures that every guest can have a sketch from you. Sarah simply takes photos of all the guests at the event, and if you want additional combinations or repeat originals to gift to family and friends, then this is how Sarah would complete them. Sarah regularly sketches over 100 guests after events so please don’t be worried about requesting extras! Sarah is very used to large events! Sketches are mailed back to you with backing card and luxury white envelopes ready for you post out with your thank yous.
What Happens on the Day?
All our prep is done is advance so set up on the day is so easy. Sarah will arrive approximately 30 minutes before your guests to take reference photos and gather any additional details needed for the sketches. Sarah requires a table and a chair. Sarah recommends a trestle sized table to allow sketches to be laid out for guests to see, however she can work in a smaller space if required.
Guests are welcome to observe Sarah as she sketches and she is super chat to everyone whilst she sketches. She will display completed illustrations for everyone to see. Sarah is known for her ability to work and talk at the same time, and although good lighting is helpful, she always attends with 2 battery operated lamps. Prob best to keep her away from the speaker though if you’d like guests to be able to chat.
Pre-Event Details: What You Need to Do?
To ensure the live illustration experience is seamless, there are a few things that we will arrange with you before your event:
A few weeks before the event:
Template Design: Decide if you would like a simple names & wedding date or a more detailed background illustrated printed on your template.
Event Planner Brief: Share logistical details with Sarah, including space and set-up requirements (a trestle table and chair). If you'd like the illustrations displayed, she’ll need some room to spread them out.
Week before the event:
Final Check: Ensure any specific details, such as dress codes, are confirmed before the event.
Decide on post event sketches: Check whether you would like Sarah to keep sketching after the end of the event from photos if your guest count is higher than Sarah can cover in the booking time. More can always be added after but it helps Sarah to inform the guests on the day whether she can accommodate more or if she has agreed with you that she will finish at the end of the event.
Post-Event Services: Keeping the Memories Alive
For extra guests: After your wedding, Sarah offers post-event sketches for those who weren’t captured on the day. Using the photos taken during the event, Sarah can complete an unlimited number of illustrations and mail them back to you upon completion.
Group sketches: Brides often struggle to get the bridesmaids together for a photo once the reception starts so Sarah is often asked to sketch this moment either from a photo or a collection of photos that we can blend into one sketch
Bridal portraits: Sarah offers custom bridal portraits, which are larger and more detailed pieces that focus on specific elements of your wedding day. These can include a close-up of the bride’s gown or a unique moment such as the first kiss. Furthermore this is a perfect gift for the paper wedding anniversary after one year of marriage.
